The Gospel - Commitment

At this point we have shared the gospel in full. Now it is time to go through a commitment presentation to see if the person(s) we are talking with understands the gospel and then go through a clarification of commitment.

The Qualifying Question: "Does this make sense to you?"

If the response is "yes", go on to repeat his answer to the second question and then to "Clarification of Commitment".

The Clarification of Commitment:

We receive the gift of eternal life by receiving the Person of Jesus Christ into our lives (John 1:12). Remember also John 1:13 and John 6:44

When we receive Christ, it involves five things.

A. We acknowledge that Christ is God, believing that He died and that He rose from the grave that we may have eternal life.
- It is essential that a Christian believe all that the Bible says. You don't pick and choose what you believe, God gives you the faith to believe it all.

B. We recognize Christ as Lord and Master of our life.
- We no longer live for ourselves but for Him
- We put Him on the throne of our heart. We give Him control of our life. Anywhere He wants to take us, and anything He wants to accomplish in us we will allow Him to do.

C. We repent (turn) from our sins and follow Jesus.
- There should be a strong desire to put away sin from our life and to live according to what Jesus demands of us in the Bible.

D. We stop trusting in ourselves and our own good deeds and put our trust in Jesus.
- We must trust Jesus. We acknowledge that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life for us.

E. We receive Christ as our personal Savior. (John 1:12-13)
- Christ calls for a full commitment, both in submission and obedience to Him and the Bible.

Now we can ask them The Commitment Question:
"Now that we have shared what it means to receive the free gift of eternal life through Jesus, do you believe God is calling you to receive this gift of eternal life now?"

If response is "yes", make sure he understands the commitment that is required by saying something like, "Now Joe, I am going to repeat myself to make sure you understand."

1. Repeat clarification of commitment in question form. "Do you believe God is calling you to receive this gift of eternal life now?"

2. Go on to prayer of commitment.

The Prayer of Commitment:
- Stress that it is their heart attitude and not the words that God is interested in.
- Ask them to pray what is on their heart.
- If they don't know what to pray or how to do it, then we can use the "prayer of commitment" to guide them. They need to understand they are only words unless there is a real commitment and desire on their part.
- Let them know it is a prayer you usually use with people like their self who want to ask Christ into their life. (briefly go over prayer) If the words express the desire of their heart, then you can ask them to repeat it after you.

Prayer: "Lord Jesus, I want you to come into my life right now. I am a sinner. I have been trusting.... but now I put my trust in You. I accept You as my personal Savior. I believe You died for me. I receive You as Lord and Master over my life. Help me to turn from my sins and follow You. I accept Your gift of eternal life. In Your name I pray, Amen."
